Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Hemp?
Hemp is a variety of Cannabis sativa. Hemp has been grown for hundreds of years, and has been used to make rope, clothing, sails, food, and much more. All of our products contain hemp (cannabidiol) as an active ingredient.
  • What is the difference between Hemp and Cannabis?
Hemp and marijuana plants are both members of the same species. Hemp is defined as a cannabis plant with 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or less, whereas marijuana is defined as a cannabis plant with more than 0.3 percent THC. CBD can be extracted from hemp and marijuana plants, respectively. In general, hemp plants contain more CBD, while cannabis plants contain more THC, the compound that provides the euphoric feeling associated with cannabis usage.
  • What are Cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids are a class of fatty chemicals found in hemp and other plants, as well as in the human body. They are the main chemical components that the cannabis plant produces. Hemp naturally creates over 100 distinct phytocannabinoids. Cannabidiol (CBD) is the most well-known of the 100+ non-intoxicating phytocannabinoids. Cannabinoids interact with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which is found in all living things except insects.
  • What is Hemp Oil?
Hemp oil is an essential oil derived from the hemp plant's leaves, buds, and stem. Hemp oil can be extracted mechanically or chemically. The oil contains a variety of phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids found in hemp during the extraction process. Hemp seed oil is made up mostly of dietary lipids and contains no other plant ingredients.
  • What is CBD Oil?
The term CBD stands for cannabidiol. It's a powerful phytocannabinoid present in hemp that helps the body and mind in a variety of ways. CBD is derived from the hemp plant's flowers and leaves in particular. (This is not to be confused with hemp seed oil, which is derived from hemp seeds but does not contain cannabinoids.)
  • Is Cannabidiol (CBD) legal?
The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the legal definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act. This made some hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3 percent THC federally legal. However, CBD products containing more than 0.3 percent THC still fall under the legal definition of marijuana and are still federally illegal even though legal under some state laws.
  • Do Joya Flor products contain THC?
Our Hemp products are tested to contain non-detectable levels of tetrahydrocannabinol THC, which Joya Flow defines as less than ~0.01mg/unit
  • What is the endocannabinoid system (ECS)?
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a group of cannabinoid receptors located in the brain and throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. The ECS consists of neuromodulatory lipids and their receptors.
  • What does FSC mean and what is FSC certification?
FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council and FSC certification ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.
  • What does biodegradable mean?
In simple terms, if something is biodegradable, it will eventually break down to its basic components and mix back into the ground given the correct conditions and the presence of microbes, fungi, or bacteria. These compounds should, but do not always, disintegrate without leaving any pollutants behind.
  • What is bioavailability?
The proportion of a drug or other substance which enters the circulation when introduced into the body and so is able to have an active effect.
  • What is Nanotechnology?
Nanotechnology is science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometers.
  • How does Nanotechnology improve Beauty products
Nanotechnology has scientifically proven to improve the performance of beauty/cosmetic products in a number of ways. Those include but are not limited to increasing the efficiency and dermal penetration of the active ingredient, controlling drug release, enhancing physical stability and improving moisturizing power,
  • What is the difference between biodegradable and recyclable?
Biodegradable is the ability for a material to be broken down naturally by the organisms in an ecosystem. Recycling is the process of taking a product and breaking it down to use it again, often as a raw material. Recycling takes human interaction to turn what would otherwise be waste into a reusable item. Unfortunately, all recyclable items will eventually become waste. They cannot endlessly be recycled. Biodegradable waste does not have this problem as it can naturally return to the earth in an eco-friendly way that doesn’t harm the environment or wildlife.
  • What is Greenwashing?
Greenwashing is when a company purports to be environmentally conscious for marketing purposes but actually isn't making any notable sustainability efforts. For example, companies involved in greenwashing behavior might make claims that their products are from recycled materials or have energy-saving benefits.
